A Little November Jackson’s Art Haul

I’ve been hard at work on *that project* and needed a little retail therapy to see me through. So of course when I saw that Jacksons were having a sale on color pencils, I jumped at the chance to grab some that I cannot get here where I live.

I’ve been semi-obsessed with Derwent Lightfast pencils the past couple months, and have increased my collection of them accordingly, always by grabbing a couple as open stock.

And while I would love to have the entire collection in a gorgeous storage box, the price of such a collection puts it way out of my price range.

So, I continue building my pencil collection one or two at a time. Except this month. When I added 10! Oops!

I will show them in full when I upload my Art Haul video, but that won’t be for a few weeks, so I thought it made sense to share them here now.

Especially as I also grabbed a couple Acrylic Gouache tubes too. It is gouache month after all!

Derwent Lightfast Pencils

First up we have the 10 Derwent lightfast pencils that I added to cart. I do have a few more I’d like to get, but funds are (as always) tight at this time of year, so I tried to choose 10 that felt timely.

Mars Black

I was influenced to buy this after seeing Frances Ives use it in a video inside her Patreon. I’m not one for black blacks, but this is such a beautiful warm black and differs so much from the midnight black I have in this brand of color pencil.

Dark Cyan

I have yet to find a blue like this – isn’t it gorgeous? I knew the moment I saw it on the Jackson’s website that it was a color I needed in my life, and I am so glad that I added it to my basket this time round.

Heather

I have and love the wile lavender pencil, but looking at the swatch online of the heather pencil made me appreciate how much pinker this one is.

Salmon

I have salmon as a color in many different pencils and materials, and I have to say that this is the most ‘un-salmony’ color I’ve ever seen.

To be fair it is a beautiful pink, but I would not classify it as salmon.

Banana

Yellow is a color that fills me with joy – though not as much joy as orange brings into my life! And as I have very few yellow options in my existing collection of Derwent Lightfast pencils, it made sense to sneak one in. Banana is a great option.

Sandstone

I was tempted by this Sandstone pencil because of how warm it is, and the autumnal feeling I had at the time of buying.

Brown Ochre

Brown Ochre is an essential colour, and I have it in three ‘opacities’ from Luminance too!

Natural Brown

This is one for the animal drawing’s I’d like to do, recommended by Becca Hall in her Patreon.

Foliage

Such a lovely green to add to my growing green pencils collection, this one is sure to be used a lot over the coming months!

Basil

I think this green was added to my basket after seeing it used by Becca Hall. To be fair, that’s how most greens end up in my collection, seeing others use them.

Acrylic Gouache from Holbein

And then there were two new acryla gouache from Holbein for me to experiment with during this month’s gouache challenge!

Something I love about these little tubes is the inclusion of the ‘Munsell’ ratings covering:

• Hue
• Value
• Chroma

Each is given a rating, and while I don’t understand color to that level, it is fascinating to see.

Coral Red

This beautiful coral red color has been on my lust-after list for a while, and the last time I ordered some acrylic gouache – back in the spring I think – this one was out of stock.

The level of happy I feel looking at this gorgeous color as I paint it on the page is unreal.

It is a three pigment color made up of:

• PR9
• PO13
• PW6

It also comes up as 2 of 4 on the Holbein permanency rating.

Ultramarine

I chose to add on Ultramarine Blue as a last moniute option, as I don’t have any dark or bright blues in my collection. Blue is such a handy color to have for mixing, and while I could have just used some of the regular gouache I have, I wanted to have an acrylic gouache for when I want the paint to stay in place for subsequent layers, whatever those might be.

This is a gorgeous color, and is made up of just one pigment:

• PB29

It also comes up as 3 of 4 on the Holbein permanency rating.

Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencil

The last thing I got in this art haul was a watercolor pencil I’ve wanted a while now. I adore the color green gold – is there anyone on earth who doesn’t? – and despite my best efforts to buy it locally and at a store in London when I visited it, I was unsuccessful. Perhaps because so many love it too?

So, I popped that into my Jacksons basket to enjoy as well. Lucky me!

Phew! There are many other little bits and bobs I got throughout this fall, but I’ll post about those separately as they didn’t come from Jackson’s.
